Minibus tour of rural pubs
We plan to restart our minibus tours of rural pubs on Saturday 20 August. These tours allow us to visit some of the more difficult to reach pubs in and around our branch area and show our support for them. The tours will collect people from near Cambridge station at 11.30 and the Golden Hind and will visit several pubs including at least one that appears in the 2022 Good Beer Guide. We will return to Cambridge at 19.30. Due to the depleted state of CAMRA’s finances we are no longer able to subsidise the tour. We will therefore need to charge participants up to £20 to cover the cost of the minibus. You’ll also need to cover the cost of your drinks and food. We are offering our branch members the earliest opportunity to reserve a place on the minibus but will open it up to members from other branches if spaces remain closer to the date. If there is insufficient interest we will not be able to run the trip. To reserve your place on the tour or to ask for more information please email our socials team.
Our next Strolling Social will be on Saturday 10 September in Waterbeach. Our next Thursday Throng will be hosted by Angela, on Thursday 29 September at the Alexandra Arms.
Summer of Pubs
We maintain an informative events section on our branch website to help you find out what’s happening when. We also have a Cambridge CAMRA 2022 Summer of Pubs Facebook group. We are using it to promote local festivals and we would like you to use it to tell us about which beers and ciders you are enjoying and where, and also to tell people when you hear about events we don’t know about. You can post descriptions and pictures. They don’t just have to be from beer and cider festivals. You can instead choose your favourite pub or a pub that you have just discovered. You can also design your own ale and cider trails in the city or in the countryside that you will spend a day walking, cycling or using public transport to get around. Our map of branch pubs will help you track them down. CAMRA nationally has its Summer of Pub running until late August. We have our own local version using Facebook. Together we will make Summer 2022 one to remember.
Cambridge Beer Festival Winter returns
Our winter beer festival is returning! This year we’re in a new location: the Guildhall,
in the very centre of Cambridge. Come and join us for real ales, international beers, cider,
perry, and food. We’ll be open from Wednesday 9 – Saturday 12 November. More information
will be on the festival website as it’s confirmed.
As always, we’re seeking volunteers for the festival. If you’re interested, visit our volunteering site.
Many thanks to all our members who have been scoring their beers recently. In the five weeks to 28 July, of the pubs with multiple scores, the Haymakers in Chesterton and the White Swan in Conington are the city and rural pubs with the highest averages. Beer scoring is easy to do via the pub’s WhatPub entry. If you have a smart phone and internet access you can score while you drink. If not you can do it from home later. Your beer scores help us to discover which pubs are serving the best beer and also helps in selecting candidates for the Good Beer Guide. WhatPub can also be used to give us feedback on pubs. If you spot that the pub description is inaccurate or the opening hours are wrong, click on Submit Updates and let us know.
Brewery liaison officer for Turpin’s Brewery
For all our breweries CAMRA has a brewery liaison officer (BLO). They’re responsible for keeping CAMRA (locally and nationally) up to date with what the brewery is doing, and vice versa. We currently have a volunteer vacancy for a BLO for Turpin’s brewery which recently moved to Burwell.
If you are interested in being the BLO for Turpin’s please email us.
Pubs code and tied tenants
The Pubs Code aims to regulate the relationship between pub tenants and larger pub owning companies. How well is it working? CAMRA would like the views of tied tenants on how the Pubs Code is working. If you are a tied pubco pub tenant please complete this anonymous survey.
