Cambridge CAMRA in June

The Tivoli reopens

Having been closed for seven years following a fire, the Tivoli on Mitcham’s Corner will fully reopen on Wednesday 25 May. They had a couple of days of invitation events this week and will be partially open this weekend. It is no longer a Wetherspoon’s pub; it is now owned by City Pub Company, which runs several other pubs in and around Cambridge. The Tivoli doesn’t just have a bar but also a roof terrace with views across the river, an indoor golf course and a shuffleboard room.

Strolling Social

On Saturday 21 May from 4pm Jacqueline will lead a Strolling Social around some of the pubs near to where she will be housesitting in Cambridge. We will visit the Portland Arms, Waterman, Maypole, Pickerel, and Champion of the Thames. Her planned itinerary is here.

Cambridge Beer Festival week

There may not be a beer festival on Jesus Green this year but 23–28 May is still Cambridge Beer Festival week and many pubs have taken up the challenge of filling the gap. The Haymakers in Chesterton and the Waggon & Horses in Milton are jumping the gun by holding festivals this weekend. The Maypole, the Empress, the Fort St George, and the Pickerel will all be holding festivals during Beer Festival week.

Six venues in the “Cambridge Beer Quarter” are also holding a combined festival during the week: the Alexandra Arms, Blue Moon, Calverley’s, Cambridge Blue, Geldart and Petersfield.

Towards the end of the week the two breweries in Waterbeach – Milton and Pastore – are holding a joint festival at their taprooms, featuring their beers, beers from Ampersand and Three Blind Mice, and cider from Blue Barrel.

Jubilee weekend festivals

Early June brings the Platinum Jubilee celebrations and another opportunity for beer festivals. We already know that the Boot in Dullingham, the Three Tuns in Fen Drayton, the Tickell Arms in Whittlesford, the Queen’s Head in Newton, the Lion & Lamb in Milton, Whaddon Golf Centre and the Pint Shop on Peas Hill are holding festivals.

Summer of Pubs

We maintain an informative Events section on our branch website to help you find out what’s happening when. This year we have also set up a Cambridge CAMRA 2022 Summer of Pubs Facebook group. We plan to use it to promote local festivals and we want you to use it to tell us about which beers and ciders you are enjoying and where and also to tell people when you hear about events we don’t know about. You can post descriptions and pictures. They don’t just have to be from beer and cider festivals. You can instead choose your favourite pub or a pub that you have just discovered. You can also design your own ale and cider trails in the city or in the countryside that you will spend a day walking, cycling or using public transport to get around. Our map of branch pubs will help you track them down. CAMRA nationally has its Summer of Pub running from early May to late August. Together we will make Summer 2022 one to remember.

SGM and June monthly meeting

When we held our AGM earlier this year we were unable to accept our branch accounts as they hadn’t been signed off by the auditors. We hope that this will have happened by the time of our June open monthly meeting which will be from 8pm, Tuesday 14 June at the King William IV in Histon. The meeting will start with a Special General Meeting to accept our latest accounts before the rest of the branch business in our regular monthly meeting.

Beer scoring

Many thanks to all our members who have been scoring their beers recently. In the five weeks to 19 May, of the pubs with multiple scores, the Portland Arms on Mitcham’s Corner and the Chestnut Tree, West Wratting are the city and rural pubs with the highest averages. Beer scoring is easy to do via the pub’s WhatPub entry. If you have a smart phone and internet access you can score while you drink. If not you can do it from home later. Your beer scores help us to discover which pubs are serving the best beer and also helps in selecting candidates for the Good Beer Guide. WhatPub can also be used to give us feedback on pubs. If you spot that the pub description is inaccurate or the opening hours are wrong, click on Submit Updates and let us know.
