We will be making further awards in the next few months and hope that we’ll be able to hold a Gala Night in the autumn.
Congratulations also to the Champion of the Thames, King Street. It is Greene King’s Night of Excellence Beer Pub of the Year 2022. And also to the Portland Arms, Mitcham’s Corner which won Best Entertainment Pub in the same awards.
Thursday Throng Social
Following the success of the first one at the end of January, the next Thursday Throng Social will be on Thursday 31 March at the Queen Edith on Wulfstan Way and will be hosted by Clare. You will remember that they are at a venue selected by a female branch member and are open to all. They differ from branch monthly meetings as there’ll be no business that needs to be discussed. It’s just about having a drink and a chat.
April Strolling Social
We have our next Strolling Social on Saturday 9 Aprilm when we will be visiting some of the city pubs at that are in the 2022 Good Beer Guide and are also on our shortlist for the 2023 Guide. As well as being a chance to socialise and enjoy a drink in some of our best pubs it will also give participants the opportunity to submit in person their views on any of the pubs on the shortlist. The social will start at the Maypole at 12.30 and progress via the Champion of the Thames, Elm Tree, Geldart and Cambridge Blue before ending at the Devonshire Arms at around 19.00. Join and leave us as you wish. For estimated timings at each pub, check the event on our website.
Good Beer Guide
We are currently deciding which of our pubs will be in the 2023 edition of the Good Beer Guide. Your nominations and beer scores were used to draw up a shortlist of 58 pubs. Currently members of our branch and of adjoining branches are marking the shortlisted pubs that they have visited in the last 6 months. We use an easy 5 point grading system. The best way for you to give your opinion is online using your CAMRA login details. You can revise your opinions as many times as you wish up until the deadline of 10 April. You can also request the shortlist and submit your opinions by email (please include your name and CAMRA membership number) or at a branch meeting or social.
Many thanks to all our members who have been scoring their beers recently. In the five weeks to 28 March, of the pubs with multiple scores, the Geldart on Ainsworth Street and the Chestnut Tree, West Wratting are the city and rural pubs with the highest averages. Beer scoring is easy to do via the pub’s WhatPub entry. If you have a smart phone and internet access you can score while you drink. If not you can do it from home later. Your beer scores help us to discover which pubs are serving the best beer and also helps in selecting candidates for the Good Beer Guide. WhatPub can also be used to give us feedback on pubs. If you spot that the pub description is inaccurate or the opening hours are wrong, click on “Submit Updates” and let us know.
Check out Events on our website for the most up to date information.
