We are delighted to announce that the Haymakers on Chesterton High Street in Cambridge is our Pub of the Year for 2021.
This year’s selection process has been heavily influenced by the Covid pandemic. Not only has it delayed the selection process but it has also influenced which pubs were on the shortlist. This year’s shortlisted pubs were some of the recipients of our branch’s lockdown awards and most will also appear in the 2022 edition of CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide which will be published on Friday 12 November.
Ten years ago the Haymakers was closed and its future was in doubt. It was then purchased by the Individual Pub Company (the sister company of Milton Brewery), refurbished and reopened in April 2013. Since then it has been offering its customers well-kept beers from Milton and other small independent breweries. It offers a selection of real ciders, many from local cidermakers. The pizzas and other food that come from its kitchen are enjoyed by many. In 2014 the Haymakers reappeared in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide after a 20 year absence and it has been in every edition since. It also received our 2014 Most Improved City Pub award. In 2017 it received our City Community Pub award. In 2019 it received our City LocAle award for the quality of its locally brewed beers. During the lockdown its kitchen hosted some of the Red Hen Project’s team and for doing so it received one of our branch’s lockdown awards. Now the Haymakers is receiving our highest award, Pub of the Year.
Alistair Cook, Pubs Officer said “Pubs play a key role in our communities. The Haymakers is one of the best examples of this. It also ensures that the quality of its ales, ciders and food are top notch. Liz and her team do all this with a smile, making all the pub’s customers welcome.”
