CAMRA member’s Charity Cycle Ride

Here is a message from CAMRA member Tim Nash who is doing a charity cycle ride from Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield to Castle Hedingham. Please support him in any way you can. As part of his charity ride Tim will be in the Kingston Arms, Cambridge from about 7pm on Tuesday 16th July, he would be very happy for branch members to call in to support him.

‘I am a regular at the Bell Inn in Castle Hedingham (former Essex pub of the year if I remember right), and part of the team that organises and runs the beer festival there each July.  If you’ve not been it is a cracking festival, usually with around 40 beers, lots of good music and even a Sunday afternoon dwyle flonking competition.

Very sadly, a member of our beer festival team passed away in November.  What is particularly tragic is that Keira was only 21 having  spent all her adult life receiving treatment for brain cancer.

She was a big Sheffield Wednesday supporter, and so I thought it would be a great idea if I cycled from Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield to Castle Hedingham, arriving just in time for the beer festival.  But because my links with her were through beer, the ride only makes sense if it includes pubs, breweries and beer!

So – on the 13th July, I’ll set off from Sheffield on a 5-day ride back to Essex, stopping as I go at breweries and good beer guide pubs.

I am getting great help from the team at St Helena in Colchester for this venture (Keira’s parents nominated St Helena as the charity they would like funds to go to), and the football club, Thornbridge Brewery (who brew The Wednesday Pale Ale) and Nethergate Brewery in Sudbury have already committed their support.

On Tuesday 16th July, I’ll be heading to Cambridge from Peterborough.  The following morning I’ll be setting off from Addenbrookes towards Nethergate Brewery and then, finally, the Bell in Castle Hedingham.

The plan is to have a few pints in the Kingston on the Tuesday evening, and I know that various friends and family will be joining me, so it could be a fun evening.  Thornbridge are being really supportive of the ride, so it makes sense to head for a pub with a good pint of Jaipur!
