• The City of Cambridge Brewery's second beer, Jet Black, has appeared and there's a third one on the way for Christmas, as well as a session beer and a strong beer. The official launch of Jet Black is on 6th November.
• Planning of the 1998 Winter Ale Festival is under way.

August 1997

• J.D. Wetherspoons are applying to turn the former ABC cinema into one of their giant real ale pubs.
• CAMRA campaigns coming up:

  • 8 Nov., CAMRA's National Mild Day
  • Oct.-Dec., CAMRA Recruitment Campaign

July 1997

• ALE Summer 1997 No. 288 is out.
• The Cambridge Arms is to be refurbished, possibly as one of Greene King's Hungry Horse themed outlets.
• The brewery is being removed from the Ancient Druids after 12 years. [It moved to Cox's Yard, Stratford-Upon-Avon.]

June 1997

• The Branch and the new City of Cambridge Brewery held a launch party on 2nd June at the brewery (Cheddar's Lane) to celebrate the opening of the first brewery in Cambridge for 25 years and and the success of its first beer, Hobson's Choice, the Champion Beer of the Beer Festival. It's a superb, well-balanced bitter - 4.1% ABV. There are no regular outlets as yet but The Cow and Calf and The Cambridge Blue have it from time to time.

• The Branch Pub of the Year is The Fountain in Ely. A report will appear in the next edition of ALE.

May 1997

• The City of Cambridge Brewery starts brewing on Monday 5th May. Their first beer will be available at the Beer Festival.

April 1997

• ALE Spring 1997 No. 287 is out.
• Volunteers are needed for the 24th Cambridge Beer Festival - cheap beer!

January 1997

• The Branch Committee was saddened by the sudden death of our Secretary, Peter Brinton, on 23rd January. His calm efficiency and good humour will be much missed.
• Preparation for the 24th Cambridge Beer Festival is under way. Can you help?
• The City of Cambridge Brewery is due to open in April, based in Cheddars Lane.
• The Yorkshire Grey has changed hands and may soon stop being one of the few City pubs without real ale. [Back to the Hit List]

• The Branch meeting at the Granta, Tue 25 Feb 8:00, will decide the final nominations for Good Beer Guide entries.
