Carlsberg have announced their intention to shut the historic Tetley brewery in Leeds by 2011. The beers, or at least some of them, will be brewed elsewhere but are hardly likely to be the same. Once Tetley Closes, the global breweries will have nearly completed their exit from producing real ales themselves, with just John Smith’s at Tadcaster brewing cask beer in any quantity. Fortunately there are lots of regional and craft brewers around to meet the increasing demand for high-quality real ales.
The results from the Champion Beer of East Anglia 2008 have been announced, the winners being:
- Mauldon’s Blackadder
- Wolf Woild Moild
- Milton Marcus Aurelius
Congratulations then to our local brewery at Milton; the fearsome Marcus Aurelius was also voted Best Strong Old Ale.
More congratulations to a Cambridgeshire brewery, this time to Oakham of Peterborough whose Attila has been crowned Supreme Champion Winter Beer of Britain 2009. Attila is a 7.5% ABV barley wine described by the brewer as having ‘fruity notes and an elderflower aroma, with the taste of ripe red berries and citrus fruit and a long bitter fruity finish’.
This year’s Cambridge Winter Ale Festival was again a great success – many thanks to all who attended and all who helped out with running it. The votes for the Beer of the Festival yielded the following results:
- Elmtree Nightlight Mild
- Cambridge Moonshine Chocolate Orange Stout
- Beeston Norfolk Pride
Cider of the Festival was Delvin End Cyclone.
