Those of us who work in large organisations are familiar with the term
"Business Continuity Plans" - which is all about being prepared for disasters
and being able to cope with the aftermath. Customers of the Carlton Arms,
Carlton Way, Cambridge must have hoped for such a Plan when they learnt
that Terri and Jethro, who had turned the pub from den of iniquity to
cornucopia of real ale delights, were heading off to the Cambridge Blue.
Fortunately rescue was indeed at hand in the shape of regular Glyn and his
father Mike who took the helm on 5 May. Glyn had worked in care services for
21 years and the only other thing he had ever had a hankering after was
running a pub - so the chance to take on his beloved local wasn't to be
missed. Dad Mike has plenty of experience in the licensed trade, having
managed the NCI Club among others. They've been joined in their new
venture by cellarman Chris and chef David, who has racked up 16 years in
the catering trade (including 7 years as a pastry chef so expect great
puddings!).
The Team, thankfully, see no reason to change the basic offer at the Carlton,
with a wide choice of well-kept, reasonably priced real ales at the top of the
agenda. The range constantly alters but on a recent visit comprised Oakham
JHB, Caledonian Deuchars IPA, Woodforde's Wherry, Elgoods Cambridge,
Potbelly Beijing Black (there's always a Mild) and Nethergate Augustinian plus
real ciders from Westons and Cassells.
On the food side, David places the emphasis on local, fresh and seasonal
offerings - including the wonderful sausages from Barkers of Shelford. For
serving times, see the advert elsewhere in the mag.
Planned developments include a kiddies area in the garden and darts and crib
teams to add to the pool and skittles teams already up and running. Beer
festivals will return to the pub next year once feet have been fully found.
It's certainly great to see the Carlton in such capable and enthusiastic hands -
good luck chaps.
