We always worry whether the beer will run out but the extra 50 casks on Friday (adding to the original 100 or so) meant there was a choice of ten beers at the end of the Festival. So, many thanks to the breweries who helped us out at short notice!
Also many thanks to all the volunteers who helped out.
So congratulations to the brewer, Frances Moore. It was brewed for the 2004 Harwich & Dovercourt Bay Winter Ale Festival and the 400th anniversary of Harwich's Royal Charter. It's a re-creation of Allsopp's Arctic Ale, brewed in 1852 for Captain Edward Belcher's expedition to the Arctic in search of John Franklin. Roger Protz' article in What's Brewing (Beer section, Feb. 2005) explains this re-creation was based on research by Frances' father, Brendan, of Iceni Brewery, Ian Hornsey (ex-Nethergate), Ray Anderson of the Brewery History Society and Colin Miller of the Colchester & NE Essex branch of CAMRA.
