The reputation of the Carlton Arms, in Carlton Way Cambridge, was formerly so bad that the company which owns it had been considering closing and demolishing it. However, early last year, it was given a "last chance" when Jethro and Terri took over. It was the couple's first pub though both had had previous experience in the trade.
The transformation which Jethro and Terri have overseen is little short of amazing. The whole pub has been thoroughly refurbished and now features a comfortable, no-smoking lounge and a lively public bar with attached games area. Real ale had long been unavailable here but you can now choose from a selection of at least four and often more. Adnams Bitter and Timothy Taylor's Landlord (Madonna's favourite) are regulars with the others being ever-changing guests. There are also regular Beer Festivals.
Food is served every lunchtime except Saturday and on Tuesday to Friday evenings - the menu is impressively long and the prices impressively low.
The pub has also raised considerable amounts for charity, with the Cambridge Cancer Care Centre and the Lady Adrian School being the main beneficiaries.

They've transformed what was probably the worst pub in the city to one of its very best. It just goes to show that, in the right hands, any pub can be made a success, despite what pub companies and breweries tell us about the country being over-pubbed. We congratulate Terri and Jethro on all their hard work and thank them for rescuing this community pub".
