Charter on Smoking in Public Places
In December 1998 the Government published a White Paper - "Smoking Kills".
Amongst many initiatives, it proposes a voluntary charter as agreed with
representatives of the drinks industry.
A summary of the key points of the charter
[as described in The Publican 25/1/99].
Some points are aimed at individual pubs, some at chains and some are industry-wide.
- have a written policy on smoking, available to staff and customers
- no-smoking areas or appropriate ventilation
- communicate no-smoking provision to customers via
external & internal signage
- rolling programme of monitoring and assessment, including
independent research
- recognition of policy as a management responsibility,
reflected in training and supervision
- support for shared expertise on benefits of policies
