Anglian Pub of the Year
Maiden's Head, Whitwell
In the middle of Hertfordshire between Stevenage and Luton, it was bought by
McMullens in about 1898, a 17th century building now greatly altered and
restored. Mike and Barbara Jones have been the publicans for the last 14 years.
Mike has won the McMullens Best Kept Cellar award for the last four years.
To become Anglian Pub of the Year, The Maidens Head had to beat off the
strong challenge of local pubs The Cambridge Blue and The Ship
at Brandon Creek, as well as The Prince of Wales, Stow Maries
(south-east Essex) and The Turks Head (East Suffolk).
We wish the publicans and McMullens Brewery good luck as the pub goes forward
to the National Pub of the Year contest.
