We generally define light bitters as any bitter with an ABV of 3.4% or lower, but higher ABV beers with an OG of 1034 or lower are also acceptable if they fit into the style. By light bitters, we generally mean low gravity or low strength, but they do also tend to be lighter in colour than stronger bitters. These beers make excellent lunchtime or session beers and are well worth preserving. We also believe that the summer months of June, July and August are ideal to promote these thirst-quenching beers - after all, they are low in alcohol and are "really refreshing" (our new slogan for the style).
Campaigning materials are available from CAMRA to help breweries or pubs promote the style: see www.camra.org.uk/lads which also has a list of light bitters currently available.
