AdHoc Pubs Guide

April 2000 - Constructive Criticism

AdHoc's Guide to Cambridge contains a lot of detailed info on pubs, gathered by their team of researchers in 1997 with some help from Cambridge & District CAMRA. Unfortunately in spite of the help, they've managed to get quite a lot wrong, for instance misspelling Cassels. It was extremely ambitious of them to attempt such a list!

Part of their aim was to be up-to-date - laptop-equipped reviewers would keep circulating around pubs. However their select-pubs-by-beer-name data, for instance, was several years out of date and they still display prominently an ancient review of the Free Press.

Another problem is their promotion of law-breaking "children welcome" pubs - ones without Children's Certificates. Apart from the legal side, these pubs could be seen as cheating relative to the (few) pubs which have gone to the considerable effort and expense of qualifying for a Certificate. Of course the real answer is to modernise the licensing laws and so this aspect of the Guide could be seen as a campaigning point!

Overall we wish them well but believe that incorrect info needs to be fixed. We've repeatedly attempted to get them to improve the Guide without any success so far. It has tremendous potential.

May 2000 - Moving Forwards

We're delighted that the new General Manager for the Cambridge Guide has taken these criticisms on board and we look forward to working with him to improve the quality of the information, benefitting everyone.
