  • J.D. Wetherspoon apparently due to open on 12 Jan.
  • Bass All Bar One opened in late Sept.
  • S&N Rat & Parrot, 2nd in the city - no definite news

• Champion Beer & Cider of East Anglia 1998 Competition

• Branch Pub of the Year awards.
• Added a page about Cassels Cider, including regular outlets.

May 1998

• Great success for the City of Cambridge, Cottage and Oakham Breweries at the 25th Cambridge Beer Festival.
• The City of Cambridge page now has a list of regular outlets.
• National Mild Day 16th May 1998.
• 43 breweries, some old, some new, and 89 beers feature in the 25th Cambridge Beer Festival's Beer, Cider & Perry List.

April 1998

• ALE Spring 1998, no. 290 is out.
• Updated The Kings, Reach page and added the The Hoops, Gt. Eversden page.
• It seems St. Andrews St./Regent St. is about to change greatly:
  • existing pubs: the Hogshead, the Fountain, the Prince Regent and the Castle;
  • J.D. Wetherspoon are opening part of the former Regal/ABC cinema as a large pub in 1999;
  • Bass plan to open the former Belfast Linen as a large All Bar One pub, restaurant and cafe in September (their cafe on Quayside opened in March);
  • S&N have asked for planning permission to convert the old Cambridge Building Society offices (nos. 3-6) in Downing Street to a cafe/bar.
• The landlord of the Grasshopper, at the far end of Mill Road, is still planning to rebuild it as a student hostel due to lack of trade, citing the preference of young people for the city centre. (CEN 27-Dec-1997)

January 1998

• The Kings, Reach, is under threat.
• The Cambridge Festival Of Winter Ales 1998 was very successful, with many new members joining (thanks!). The City of Cambridge's fourth brew, Bramling Traditional, made its debut and Old Chimney's Winter Cloving was voted Champion Beer of the Festival. [Beer list & results.]
