- Latest news on the St Andrew's Street developments:
- J.D. Wetherspoon apparently due to open on 12 Jan.
- Bass All Bar One opened in late Sept.
- S&N Rat & Parrot, 2nd in the city - no definite news

- ALE Spring 1998, no. 290 is out.
- Updated The Kings, Reach page and added the
The Hoops, Gt. Eversden page.
- It seems St. Andrews St./Regent St. is about to change greatly:
- existing pubs: the Hogshead, the Fountain, the Prince Regent and the Castle;
- J.D. Wetherspoon are opening part of the former Regal/ABC cinema as a large pub in 1999;
- Bass plan to open the former Belfast Linen as a large All Bar One pub, restaurant and cafe
in September (their cafe on Quayside opened in March);
- S&N have asked for planning permission to convert the old Cambridge Building Society offices
(nos. 3-6) in Downing Street to a cafe/bar.
- The landlord of the Grasshopper, at the far end of Mill Road, is still planning to rebuild
it as a student hostel due to lack of trade, citing the preference of young people for the city centre.
